Project goals

Currently ~180 impact structures are confirmed on Earth, however, many of them are not exposed and subsurface information is only available from geophysical surveys and drill holes. Thus, the scientific deep drilling is essential since it provides ground truth data of the subsurface properties of important structures and therefore makes a quantum leap in the scientific understanding of the Earths' processes and structures. Here we describe a project to investigate the physical properties of samples from deep drillings of four large impact structures:

6a. Chicxulub (Mexico)
6b. Bosumtwi (Ghana)
6c. Chesapeake (USA)
6d. Elgygytkyn (Russia)

Included is also a drilling through economically valuable Outokumpu formation in Finland(6e). The drillings are carried out in the framework of International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), in collaboration with top ranked laboratories. The project has three objectives: (i) to delineate important layers, such as impact, ore, etc., (ii) to study the shock generated changes in rocks and minerals and their physical properties, (iii) to use these data in modeling the geophysical anomalies of impact structures changes.
